 Further course specific information

Instrumental ensemble course for adults (2024 fees - £200 MMC members, £265 non-MMC)

This week we will be at Tytherington School, Macclesfield where there is plenty of parking on site.

Choose whether to register for jazz or classical ensembles. Those on the jazz course will have sessions in jazz theory and improvisation as well as ensemble sessions and sectionals. Those on the classical course will have both large and small ensemble rehearsals and sectional rehearsals with instrumental specialists.

Instrumental ensemble course for youth (2024 fees - £130 MMC members, £160 non-MMC)

This week we will be held at Parkroyal School, Macclesfield.

Choose whether to register for jazz or classical ensembles. Those on the jazz course will have sessions in improvisation as well as ensemble sessions and sectionals. Those on the classical course will have both large and small ensemble rehearsals and sectional rehearsals with instrumental specialists. Both courses will receive musicianship sessions.

The classical ensembles course is aimed mainly at 7-16 year olds who are playing an orchestral instrument at grades 1+ (bowed strings, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion). Small ensembles according to age and experience will be created, as well as joining together for a full ensemble piece.

The jazz ensembles course is aimed at 11-18s, grade 3+ playing saxophone, brass and rhythm section (drums, keyboard and electric guitars).

Singing course and piano workshops for youth (2024 fees - £130 MMC members, £160 non-MMC)

This week will be held in Parkroyal School, Macclesfield.

You will spend the morning learning songs based around a theme. Then in the afternoon you can choose between further part singing, piano workshops and arts sessions, where you will design and create a backdrop for the final concert. Piano workshops will cover themes including sightreading and performance skills. Pianists should ideally be grade 1+. No experience is necessary for the singing.

Common features of all the courses are as follows:

  • Tuition is delivered by DBS-checked freelance professional musicians, most of whom are also regular tutors at MMC.
  • Sessions run from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday, including an end of course concert on Friday afternoon where family and friends can come to hear the work undertaken during the week.
  • Participants need to attend every day as we build on learning from the previous day with the aim of preparing for the end of course concert.
  • Sessions will include small and larger ensemble rehearsals. The youth courses will also include musicianship and singing sessions.
  • The fee covers all tuition and music provision. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept childcare vouchers as we run these courses as an ad hoc venture.
  • Please bring your own refreshments each day.
  • The courses will run concurrently in pairs so it is generally only possible to sign up for one course per week. We hope to conclude each end of course concert a joint number involving everyone from both courses as a grand finale!
  • Joining MMC for the summer term will qualify you for the cheaper rate.
  • Bursaries may be available for those on low incomes. Please enquire further.
