Summer Courses 2025

MMC runs courses during the summer holidays for adults and youth, with a range of orchestral and jazz ensembles.

Dates for 2025 are now available - register interest to secure your place.

Since running our first strings course in 2013 we have now expanded to running courses covering classical and jazz courses for adults and an instrumental
ensemble course for under 18s.

Dates for 2025:

  • 28 July - 1 August: Adult Jazz ensembles.
  • 4 - 8 August: Youth Jazz and Classical ensembles.
  • 11 - 15 August: Adult Orchestral strings and Winds ensembles.

Further course specific information

Jazz ensemble course for adults (2025 fees - £220 MMC members*, £295 non- MMC)

This week we will be at Tytherington School, Macclesfield where there is plenty of parking on site.
The jazz course (course director Kyran Matthews) will have sessions in jazz theory and improvisation as well as small and large ensemble sessions and sectionals..

Instrumental ensemble course for youth (2025 fees - £130 MMC members, £160 non-MMC)

This week we be held at Parkroyal School, Macclesfield.

Choose whether to register for jazz or classical ensembles. Those on the jazz arm will have sessions in improvisation as well as ensemble sessions and sectionals. Those on the classical arm will have both large and small ensemble rehearsals, and sectional rehearsals with instrumental specialists. Both courses will receive musicianship sessions.

The classical arm is aimed mainly at 7-16 year olds who are playing an orchestral instrument at grades 1+ (bowed strings, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn, brass, percussion). Small ensembles according to age and experience will be created, as well as joining together for a full ensemble piece.
The jazz ensembles course is aimed at 11-18s, grade 3+ playing saxophone, brass and rhythm section (drums, keyboard and electric guitars).

Classical ensembles course for adults (2025 fees - £220 MMC members*, £295 non-MMC)

This week will be held at Tytherington School, Macclesfield.

String players will form a string ensemble directed by Louise Latham with additional support for cellists provided by Barbara Grunthal. A wide range of repertoire will be studied. It is recommended that you are of at least grade 5 standard. Music will be circulated a couple of weeks beforehand. The winds course (directed by Sally Baldwin) is for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and French horns. Wind players will play in multiple chamber groups exploring the wind chamber repertoire. It is recommended that you are at least grade 5 standard.

*To qualify for the MMC member rate you need to be a paid up member of MMC for the summer term 2025
