Group beginner lessons at MMC From September 2025 we are offering group beginner lessons for both adults and children in recorder, orchestral strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), ukulele, guitar, flute, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone.

I’m interested. Do I need to have studied music before? No - we will go right from the very beginning. Adult and children are taught separately by professional freelance musicians.

What do I do about an instrument? We can help you source an instrument.

How much does it cost? The MMC registration fee is £80 for adults and £40 for under 18s per term, which typically lasts for 10 weeks.

Sounds good. How do I sign up? Register your interest for a start in September. Group beginner lessons are for new members only, or for children who have attended just musicianship classes before. Contact info@maccmusiccentre.co.uk for more details. Once Autumn term registrations are open (mid-to-late August) you can sign up directly on the registration form.

Please note: Lessons will only run if there are sufficient numbers (minimum 3 adults or 4 children). We will confirm at the end of August whether the group will run in September. If there are just a couple of people interested we could run the group from January subject to further interest.

Orchestral strings will learn all together in one group.

If you would rather learn as an individual we can put you in touch with one of our tutors. Individual lessons are a private arrangement between the learner and the tutor and are not included in the MMC registration. You do not need to be an MMC member to access individual tuition.

MMC Business Committee.

The Northern Chamber Orchestra is providing tutors to run masterclasses in orchestral strings, winds and brass instruments over the coming months. These are open to MMC members and non-members alike.

Sounds intriguing – what is a masterclass?

A masterclass is an open lesson where participants work at a piece of music they are studying with the tutor. Both participants and audience learn so much from these sessions. During the hour long session up to 4 or 5 participants can play.

Sounds a bit scary – is it only for advanced players?

Not at all. Musicians at any stage of their musical learning journey are very welcome to participate. This is the third year that the NCO has been sending tutors in and musicians at all levels have enjoyed the sessions from pre-grade 1 to grade 8. The tutors are always very positive and encouraging.

Sounds like fun – when are they happening?

  • January 18: 12pm orchestral strings (violin, viola, violoncello, double bass)
  • March 15: 11am and 12pm winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone)
  • April 5: 11am and 12pm brass (cornet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, euphonium, French horn, tenor horn)
  • May 3: 12pm orchestral strings, 11am and 12pm winds

How do I register?

If you would like to be a participant then please email us stating your instrument and approximate grade. There is no need to register if you would like to observe.

Everyone come to the foyer of the Performing Arts Block at Fallibroome and we’ll direct you from there.

Our 30th Anniversary concert is fast approaching, featuring as many groups as possible that meet and play at MMC! We are very much looking forward to celebrating all that is so wonderful about MMC with all of you and your families.
